Comic Festival attracts tourists to Makarska

An international comic festival is to take place in Makarska, Croatia from 20 to 23 May.Among the big comic names expected to attend are Spanish artist Enrique Sanchez Abuli, Eduardo Risso, Ivo Milazzo, Pasquale Ruju, Goran Parlov, Gianpiero Casertano and Zoran Janjetov.Croatian bands will play a series of concerts and up to 1,500 people are expected, said organisers.

With eggs against medically-assisted fertilization laws

Hundreds of eggs left in various public places across Croatia and the United States have marked the beginning of a protest called: "Ministers, my eggs are not to be thrown away."The action has been organised by Udruga Roda (Stork Organisation) as a protest against medically-assisted reproduction laws, in particular the provision that limits fertilization to three egg cells.Croatian law also bans embryo freezing. It is one of the strictest in the world, with only Bangladesh and El Salvador having similar laws in place.The action coincides with Congress about medically-assisted reprodcution that is currently taking place in Plitvice.

Activists protest against EBRD in Zagreb

With a symbolic release of 50 black balloons with CO2 written on them, environmental activists gathered to protest at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development conference (ERDB) in Zagreb's Marshal Tito Square, yesterday (Thurs).The protestors from Bank Watch and Zelene Akcije (Green Action) warn that EBRD has numerous harmful projects that stimulate the use of "dirty" fossil fuels such as coal in Russia, Kazakhstan, Romania and neighbouring Croatia.Green Action wants EBRD to influence the Croatian government to stop the promotion of the building of a coal thermal power plant that should instead run on renewable energy sources.Toni Vidan -

Karlovac police hop on bikes

Karlovac policemen will introduce a bicycle patrol on 1 June, the police administration office has announced.The project has proved successful in other places and Karlovac police say it will increase efficacy when it comes to parking violations and catching criminals in the act."The goal of the bike programme is to make the police even more approachable for residents of Karlovac. PM´s nicknames debated at press conference

Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor's nicknames were the centre of discussion during a press conference of the Association of Women in the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) held in Dubrovnik, yesterday (Tues).

Dubravka Maruncic, the president of the Association's Dubrovnik branch said that the diminutive "Jaca" - which the media often called Kosor - was inappropriate. "Behind such a nickname lies a large dose of cynicism. PM and opposition meet to discuss diaspora vote

Bus full of children catches fire

A school bus full of children caught fire around 2pm today (Mon) in Dijanes near Zagreb."It was frightening, a true disaster.  The bus was standing at a stop when one woman noticed it was on fire. She notified the driver who luckily was able to evacuate the children in time. We tried to extinguish the flames, but we couldn't," a witness said.None of the 30 students on board were injured, the Croatian daily Vecernji List reports.
