Austrian Croat minority claim tamburitza world record

A row over who holds the world record for the biggest tamburitza orchestra has broken out.Markus Karlich of the Tamburica Group in Trausdorf, Austria, sent a letter to the Croatian Times this week saying that news reported in February that the Croatian tamburitza band "100 tamburasa" held the world record was simply not true.He claimed instead that his Tamburica Group has 260 players from Austria and Hungary and is the rightful owner of the Guinness World Record. But the Croatian-based 100 tamburasa orchestra says it has some of the most prominent players in the world including Zvonimir Tonkovic, Darko Kranjcevic and Marijan Kolak, and wider exposure as they play not only in Croatia but also abroad, their speciality being a Christmas concert in Vienna. The tamburitza is a member of the long-necked lute family and popular in Eastern and Southeastern Europe, particularly in Slavonia in Croatia.
