PM´s nicknames debated at press conference

Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor's nicknames were the centre of discussion during a press conference of the Association of Women in the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) held in Dubrovnik, yesterday (Tues).

Dubravka Maruncic, the president of the Association's Dubrovnik branch said that the diminutive "Jaca" - which the media often called Kosor - was inappropriate. "Behind such a nickname lies a large dose of cynicism. This is not a question of a 'pet' name, but rather of a negative, mocking nickname," she said adding that the PM should be called "Jadre" if the norms of Croatian language are to be respected, the Croatian daily Vecernji List writes.

Kosor mentioned the media's use of the nickname at a conference for Gender Equality in the Media which she opened last Friday.  She spoke of numerous instances in which her fashion accessories such as brooches and purses were inappropriately commented upon as well as that she is often referred to in the media by her diminutive nickname "Jaca."

Maruncic said she found the media's use of the nickname not only cynical, but reflective of gender inequalities. "This nickname does not respect the woman behind it, the politician that dared to do her job.  Her work is also not respected," she said.
