The heat wave that has hit Croatia in the last couple of days has prompted the Minister of Health and Social Welfare Darko Milinovic to issue recommendations to citizens urging them to stay inside and drink a lot of water.
Especially vulnerable groups are the elderly, those chronically ill from cardiovascular disease - and children.
Milinovic also recommends especially to avoid being exposed to the sun between 10am and 5pm. In those cases where it is necessary to spend time outdoors, he urges citizens to protect themselves with appropriate hats and sunglasses.
Staying hydrated by drinking up to 2.5 litres of liquid a day is imperative, as is trying to avoid alcohol and sodas. It also important to avoid fat, fried, spiced and heavy meals, and instead eat a lot of vegetables, fruits, salads and fish.
In case of a headache, nausea, vertigo or dehydration, the Minister urges citizens to immediately contact their healthcare provider or the emergency services.
He also encourages friends, family and neighbours of more vulnerable persons to check in on them more frequently as this could potentially save their life.
Two deaths in Sisak have been linked to the heat wave, as well as numerous medical interventions on people who have collapsed, the Croatian daily Jutarnji List reports.
