The European Union institutions are denying union claims that the hiring of Croatian citizens for positions in the EU has been halted because of "budget reasons."Unions claim that the hiring of Croatian nationals has hit a standstill. After some 1,400 Croatians passed the European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) testing in February last year, only a few of them have been notified about the next stages .Although there has been no official confirmation, many sources in the EU admit that the delay in procuring temporary contracts for Croatian citizens is in large part due to the delay in the country's negotiations on joining the EU.Simon Coates from EU Council's FFPE union said for the EU Observer: "In the same period as we are preparing for the Croatian accession, we are being told that we cannot hire Croatian translators and lawyer-linguists for a long time."But the head of the European Council's press office Nicolas Kerleroux, said that the Council is in the process of recruiting a team of legal linguists, with the goal that they will begin work at the beginning of 2011. They will continue with need-based recruitments afterwards. The European Commission says that the contract work for Croatian citizens is limited to the accession preparations and only when the date of the accession is determined will the larger-scale hiring begin, the daily Jutarnji List writes.
