Textile worker Zagreb´s 'woman of the year'
The leader of the workers at the Kamensko textile factory that staged a hunger strike over months of unpaid salaries last October, has been honoured as Zagreb's "woman of the year."The Zagreb City Assembly awarded the recognition and 50,000 kunas (6,742 Euros) to Djurdjica Krnjak for her role in leading a group of women "who became the synonym of the fight for women's equality" in the labour market. The employees from the textile factory went on a 14-day hunger strike during the night while continuing to work during the day.The members of the committee giving the award recognized that this year's award recognizes that an ordinary woman can be a winner, but also criticises the system. The Assembly's President Boris Sprem said all 25 of Kamensko's employees should be invited for the ceremony."They used an unusual, new method. Not only did they go on a hunger strike during the night, but they also worked during the day. Thus they showed how difficult this was for them," Sprem said, adding that he hopes that the monetary reward will help Krnjak whose son is unemployed and who is still in a very difficult situation.
