Ceiling crashes in Osijek primary school

A ceiling has collapsed in the corridor of a Vijenac primary school in Osijek just after 9pm last (Wed) night, trapping students inside the gymnasium.Some 20 nine and ten-year-olds were having their karate lessons when the ceiling in the hallway leading to the gym collapsed.  No one was hurt, but the students had to wait for half an hour for firemen to remove the concrete.This is the second time that a ceiling has fallen in at an Osijek school this year.  Most of the city's schools are in a devastating conditions and the government has taken out a 1.38 million

Man who shot his grandmother back in jail for threatening his uncle

A 28-year-old man from Kastel Stari near Split is back in jail for threatening his uncle after being released from custody for shooting his grandmother.

Ante Tesija Kukic wounded his 75-year-old grandmother Ana on March 20th with a bullet that was allegedly intended for his uncle.

Ten days after his release from custody, he has again threatened his uncle Ivan, 40, because of a dispute over property.  Kukic has claimed that he is the sole owner of the family's property and cattle, the Croatian daily Vecernji List reports.

The magistrate has now ordered Kukic held until further notice.

Twelve headstones destroyed at Jewish cemetery in Osijek

The police are investigating the destruction of twelve headstones at a Jewish cemetery in Osijek in eastern Croatia.The secretary of the Jewish community Drago Kohn said that this is the first time that something like this has happened in Osijek, but that they are doubtful that the destruction is the result of vandalism."On Saturday one of our members visited the graveyard and seven headstones in the same row were destroyed. We think it is impossible that age or weather has done this."Most of the graves at the cemetery date back to the 19th or the first part of 20th century. 

New political party presented in Zagreb

Man survives train crash in Koprivnica

A speeding train ploughed into a car at a railway crossing in Koprivnica (northern Croatia) yesterday (Sun), sending the vehicle spinning 10 metres off the tracks.The car driver, Branko Kresonja, 54, who had been trying to drive across the level crossing despite flashing warning lights, escaped with a broken clavicle bone.He was immediately taken to hospital where police officers tested him for drunk driving while nurses bandaged him up.The train was undamaged in the incident and traffic resumed shortly after.

Croatian tramp died a millionaire, almost

Pessimism strong amongs Croatia´s business leaders

Croatia marks 150th anniversary of first railway

Croatian Railways start activities to mark 150 years since the first train arrived at the first station in Croatia.On 24 April 1860 the train line from Nagykaniza in Hungary to Kotoriba - Zagreb was opened ushering in the beginning of Croatia's railway network.The celebration for the 150th anniversary will be held on Saturday, 24 April, at the railway station in Kotoriba in northern Croatia, Croatian Railways have announced.The programme in Kotoriba will include the arrival of a special train from Zagreb and Hungary, and numerous musical and cultural programmes.

Human bones found behind kindergarten

Human bones have been found behind a kindergarten in Zagreb.The grim discovery at the Sumska Jagoda (Wild Strawberry) kindergarten was made on Sunday afternoon by a passerby.The bones were transferred to the Institute for Forensic Medicine and Criminology where a coroner determined they were at least 20 years old.Police are investigating.

Murder of a 20-year-old in Zagreb an accident

The shooting of a man during a suspected drunken brawl has been ruled an accident, police said.Ivan Galic, 20, was shot dead by Roko Kotlar, 20, after the two men and a friend went out for beers at a local bar.Kotlar had taken the pistol with him and towards the end of the evening had begun playing with it. Crisis tax ends in November

Adriatic gets fewer tourists but they stay longer

Croatia's Adriatic coast saw a drop in holiday makers in the first three months of 2010 with only 252,000 tourists, a four percent decrease from the same period last year, the preliminary statistics of the Croatian National Tourist Board show.But 778,000 overnight stays saw a one percent increase over last year, of visitors staying longer.Adriatic destinations received 11 percent more tourists this March than the same month last year, or 135,300 visitors. Tractor runs over owner

A Croatian OAP was killed when his defunct tractor ran him over.The 66-year-old peasant from the northern village of Vrhovljani had crawled under the tractor to fix the engine but wasn't able to get out quickly enough after getting it to work.He died from severe internal injuries.

Croatian food industry stable despite recession

The Croatian food industry did relatively well in nine months of 2009, making 980 million kunas (134,773,000 Euros) of gross profit despite the recession.That is an increase of 12,4 percent compared to 2008, financial agency FINA reports.In comparison to other sectors, the industry remained relatively stable, increasing employment by two percent.The effects of the economic crisis did have a negative impact on investment in fixed assets that were reduced by 25.4 percent. Two Croatian footballers are recovering in hospital after getting an electric shock while taking a shower after a match on Saturday.Valentin Coric and Zvonimir Camo from Neretvanac FC were taken to KB hospital in Split after the electric shock hit them in nearby Kastel Sucurac.Five players were taking a shower together after the 3rd division match between the hosting team of Jadran and Neretvanac when the accident happened.Two were seriously injured and rushed to the hospital.It is believed the electric shock was caused by a boiler failure.

Croatia´s economy expected to grow slowly but surely

Prime Minister Kosor losing popularity, poll shows

The Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor's popularity went down by three percent last month, the latest CRODemoskop results have shown.A monthly survey by Promocija Plus agency shows the Prime Minister in second place with 13,1 percent of the vote.  The most popular Croatian politician is the country's president Ivo Josipovic, who got 39,8 percent support.
