Toll privilege cuts discriminate against the blind

The Croatian Association for the Blind has said it will go on hunger strike if changes to a new discriminatory law are not made.Vojin Peric, the president of the Croatian Association of the Blind claims that the Law on Public Roads revokes toll privileges only some people with disabilities and discriminates against the blind since not all of them are affected."Those who lost their eyesight in the war still have the right to toll-free roads," says Peric, clarifying that this means that the law is dividing the blind according to the cause of their blindness. For every trip outside of the city, Peric says he has to ask a friend or a relative to take him.  Before he could treat them to coffee and a small allowance, but now in addition he has to pay for the toll.In Croatia, there are 6,000 blind people, and only 10 of them have a personal vehicle."That fact denies the government's arguments about rationalisations and savings because it is a question of only 200,000 kunas (27.8 thousand Euros)."  The Association is planning to go on hunger strike in September if nothing changes before then, the Croatian daily Vecernji List writes.
