During this tourist season the Croatian police will observe traffic from the air as well as maximize the number of patrols on the streets in order to decrease heavy accidents, the Ministry of Interior (MUP) has announced. The announcement comes after the Traffic Club Austria (VCÖ) released a study last week which shows Croatia as the most dangerous European country rated by the number of fatal traffic accidents.MUP says that the Austrian study has used old data and that the most recent numbers from 2009 show that 124 people died on the roads per million residents, instead of 150 as the research highlights.Amongst its efforts to further decrease these numbers, MUP has announced severe sanctions for traffic violations and has printed brochures "Summer on Croatian roads" aimed to inform drivers of laws and important services. The brochures are printed in English, French, Croatia, Slovenian, German, Hungarian, Czech and Italian languages. In 2009, 548 persons died on Croatian roads, which is 17.5 per cent fewer than in 2008. The number of accidents in which a person was hurt also decreased by three per cent. This year, 160 persons have died until June 27, a 9.1 per cent decrease compared to the same period last year, the Croatian daily Jutarnji List reports.
