Croatian scientists work on key to longevity

A Mediterranean Institute for Life Sciences team led by scientist Miroslav Radman is halfway to discovering the key to longevity, the Institute writes in a press release.A team currently researching molecules that could protect all proteins from cell oxidation discovered the existence of this protective mechanism by looking at two bacteria – E.Coli, a common presence in humans' intestines, and Deinococcus radiodurans, the most radio-resistant organism known. The protection of the proteins in these two bacteria is achieved through a synthesis of small and still undefined molecules, which neutralise the effects of radiation, the Croatian daily Vecernji List writes. The Institute explains that the active forms of oxygen attack like lightning and cause oxidation of everything, from steel that rusts to DNA. But antioxidants appear in the form of molecules and protect the proteins in resistant species.
